Bio
Steven L. Abrams took office as the 32nd Mayor of Boca Raton, Florida in March, 2001.
Mayor Abrams is best known for leading Boca Raton through the first bioterrorist incident in American history. The Palm Beach Post dubbed Mayor Abrams the "Rudy Giuliani of the tropics" as he "embarked on a campaign to supply reliable information and offer reassurance to the people of his city."
The Mayor was voted "Best City Official" and "Local Hero" for 2002 by the readers of the Boca Raton Times.
He went inside the American Media building perimeter to speak with police and firefighters and into a decontaminated postal facility to meet with workers, yet The Post reported that the Mayor refused to be tested for anthrax to show confidence in the assurances of public health professionals.
The Mayor received the Distinguished Service Medal from the Israel National Police for his leadership during the ordeal. He testified on national television on the government's response to the incident at the invitation of a United States Senate subcommittee.
Prior to his election, Mayor Abrams served five terms as City Council Member from 1989 to 1999, including three years as Deputy Mayor. He was a member of the City's Planning and Zoning Board between 1987 and 1989. Mayor Abrams is a past president and current board member (ex officio) of the Palm Beach County League of Cities.
Mayor Abrams is an attorney in the Boca Raton office of the national law firm of Blank Rome Comisky & McCauley. Prior to moving to Florida, he served in the White House as law clerk to the Counsel to President Reagan. He is a member of the Florida and District of Columbia Bars.
Mayor Abrams was the recipient of the Philo Sherman Bennett Prize for the best Government senior thesis at Harvard University, where he was graduated magna cum laude in 1980. He received his law degree from The George Washington University in 1985.
In 2001, the Mayor was inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars as a distinguished member by the Florida Atlantic University chapter. |
